about

During the spring/summer of 2005 — when Sister 9 was known as Parlour 9 (and the ethos was LO-FI / DIY ONLY, meaning that the use of recording studios was banned in all of the label’s output) — Dolium’s Reece Adamo (aka Rhys Bloodjoy) set out on a mission to record bands using basic, portable analogue recording equipment direct from rehearsal rooms, attics and living rooms from all around the UK, and all with zero post-production polish!

Now, as part of our 20 Year Anniversary, we bring you this S9 Shop Exclusive FREE EP featuring 1 track from four different sessions that were recorded back then!

Reece’s band’s debut album, Kisses Fractures, had been recorded the exact same way and was receiving much critical acclaim that year — with The Independent describing the sound as “gloriously cheap and mesmerising” and BBC Radio 1 DJs regularly spinning tunes from the record — so hopes were high for “The Sound Of Lo-Fi Superior” to break the mould and push boundaries.

As expected, the Parlour 9 Sessions were rushed, unorganised, and at times, frighteningly under-equipped for the task(s) at hand — and yet, the urgency of each session shines brightly from within the fabric of each recording and anything lacking due to technical incorrectness is more often than not made up for in both energy and sonic vitality.

The four tracks on this EP were selected from 9 tracks that were recorded in various rehearsal rooms in London and 3 tracks recorded in the attic at “Dolium HQ”. Aside from Dolium, we don’t know what became of the bands — most likely they dissolved and morphed into other projects — but we do know that these genuine lo-fi recordings capture exactly what they were about at that time, and that’s an essence which is often lost in real-world recording studios, for better or for worse.

The proof is in the pudding folks, so why not take a little bite and experience it for yourselves?!
